Celebrate Matariki with Raranga Workshops at The Palms.
Led by Whiritahi, a local collective of wāhine Māori artists, these hands-on workshops invite children and adults alike to explore the art of traditional harakeke weaving.
Create your own ika (fish) or whetū (star) while learning about the tikanga and cultural significance behind this treasured practice.
Connect, create, and celebrate Matariki together.
Workshop schedule:
Monday 6 July
Ika: 10am – 10.45am
Whetū: 11.00am – 12.30pm & 1.00pm – 2.30pm
Wednesday 8 July
Ika: 10am – 10.45am
Whetū: 11.00am – 12.30pm & 1.00pm – 2.30pm
Our goal is to make these experiences as accessible as possible so more members of our community can take part in celebrating Matariki and learning the art of raranga. All workshops are now FREE to attend.
Ika workshops:
Suitable for children 4+ years
Younger children are welcome but will need adult assistance (accompanying adults do not need a ticket for this workshop).
Whetū workshops
Suitable for children 8+ years and adults (everyone creating a whetū will need to book a ticket).

About Whiritahi:
Whiritahi is a Māori weaving collective based at the Climate Action Campus at their wharepora, Te Whare o Hinerauāmoa.
In our wharepora, we believe that raranga and whatu support our hauora journey through weaving and sharing time together, we build meaningful relationships while growing in our mātauranga Māori.
We have created a safe space where tikanga is honoured, welcoming our whānau to create, learn, share, and grow, building confidence and a supportive weaving community.
